The liberalization of the communist system in mid-1950s, disillusionment with the policy of the West, fears connected with West German revisionism, and dwindling chances of change in the situation of Central-Eastern Europe contributed to a differentiation of attitudes among the Polish emigrants. Jędrzej Giertych, niezwykle płodny publicysta i ideolog mchu narodowego na emigracji, w 1976 i 1982 r. ogłosił listy otwarte do społeczeństwa w kraju. Listy pisane w okresie narastania niepokojów społecznych i perturbacji politycznych w PRL były swoistym narzędziem walki politycznej oraz komunikacji z rodakami w kraju. Do zabrania głosu skłaniała Giertycha troska o los Polski. Emigracyjny publicysta czuł moralną potrzebę mówienia do narodu. W tonie żarliwego patriotyzmu ostrzegał przed groźbą antysowieckiego powstania, demaskował knowania światowego żydostwa, odwoływał się do straszaka niemieckiego.
